People have last night out before second England lockdown

Last orders in London before lockdown

People packed on to streets for one last night before England went into a second lockdown.

They queued at pubs and ate out at restaurants before doors closed at 22:00 GMT for the month-long lockdown to reduce coronavirus cases.

The streets of Soho in central London were heaving, while emergency services in Merseyside were attacked with fireworks at a bonfire.

The Met Police reported no restriction-related incidents in London.

The victim remains in a serious condition in Royal Sussex County Hospital following the attack shortly after 22:00 GMT. Police have appealed for witnesses.

Large crowds also built up outside pubs in cities like Cambridge as people made the most of being out.

Meanwhile in the capital, many Londoners reported high levels of traffic as people attempted to leave the city before lockdown.

Mary Creagh, chief executive of walking charity Living Streets, tweeted that it was "total traffic madness" as she cycled home at 19:00.

"Tonight, everywhere is a high traffic neighbourhood," she said.
