Police pulled a safe out of an "isolated" fishing lake following a ram-raid at a nearby post office.

Officers were called to reports of a burglary at Sharnford post office, Leicester Road, at 03:50 BST on Wednesday.

Thieves had driven a vehicle into the front door and had escaped with the safe and a quantity of cash.

The empty safe was found in Foundation Lake in nearby Kirkby Mallory, Leicestershire.

Police asked witnesses to contact them.

The lake's former owner Roy Marlow, who now runs nearby Mallory Park Fisheries, said he had given up Foundation Lake because it was "isolated" and "out-of-the-way".

"The problem was that the area was difficult to police and people frequently used to fly-tip there," he said.

"It was not uncommon to find cookers, settees and chairs dumped at the entrance. I have never found anything from a scene of crime there before though."
