How a Welsh uni helps F1 star reach top speed

What does it take to be a Formula One driver?

Looking at demands put on elite motor sport drivers, sports scientists at Swansea University have been helping 2025 F1 season favourite Lando Norris get to the top of the podium.

Documented on Norris's YouTube channel, the team put him through rigorous testing to help inform his training, which included assessing "neck strength and neck profiling" to prepare for G-force and checking reaction times and his grip strength.

Lecturer and researcher Christian Vassalo said: "There has been a stereotype that drivers aren't athletes but recently, and thanks to projects like this, that perception is changing."
