'Tornado' rips through soft play centre

This was the moment a small tornado, known as a "dust devil", tore into a Nottinghamshire soft play centre.

The twister removed several glass skylights from Kids Zone in Albion Close, Worksop, at 14:45 BST on Tuesday.

Some smashed on to the neighbouring car park, but fortunately no one was injured.

Owner of the centre, Graeme Murray said: "There was just this almighty freak gust of wind and it lifted our roof.

"The majority of the glass was deposited on the car park. We were open at the time and there were people in there. A lot were upset and traumatised, but nobody was injured."

BBC senior weather presenter Anna Church said: "It was a very unsettled start to the week, with parts of Nottinghamshire experiencing half a month's rainfall in 24 hours.

"At the time the video was filmed there was a line of heavy showers moving through. These intensified directly over Worksop, which would have produced some strong up draughts.

"As a result, there may have been a brief tornado at the time, but without extensive investigations it's hard to officially confirm."

Mr Murray said when the footage was posted on their Facebook page there was surprise about what had happened.

"It was so localised - it was only us and our neighbours who sustained any damage."

Kids Zone is working with its insurers and roofers to repair the damage.
