Biden first US president to visit Amazon rainforest

President Joe Biden on Sunday visited the Amazon rainforest in Brazil, becoming the first sitting US president to do so.

The region, roughly the size of Australia, plays a crucial role in storing carbon dioxide, a key factor in global warming.

During his visit, Biden signed a declaration making 17 November International Conservation Day and vowed that the United States would spend millions of dollars on restoring land, planting native tree species, supporting biodiversity efforts and increasing fertiliser efficiency programs on the Amazon.
