Army veteran training for Canadian canoe challenge

An army veteran has been preparing for a challenging canoe trek through Canadian wilderness by training on the River Tees.

Dan Smith, from Northumberland, is planning to canoe solo for 310 miles (500km) along the River Hess.

The 45-year-old Afghanistan veteran will be airlifted into the wilderness and will have to carry a shotgun to defend himself against potential bear attacks.

Mr Smith has been using the River Tees as a training area for his sub-artic adventure which will take him two weeks to complete in July.

He has previously paddled the entire length of Britain and is now raising funds for two veterans charities Launchpad and Team Forces.
