A leisure centre has reopened following a revamp.

Maryport Activity Centre in Cumbria, formerly The Wave, was unveiled with a new play centre and studio spaces, along with upgraded climbing attractions and gym facilities.

It is part of the £12m regeneration of Maryport, led by Cumberland Council.

Council leader Mark Fryer said: "A new name, new attractions and a new vision will really put this venue on the map."

The building, close to the town's historic harbour, underwent a "major refurbishment", the Labour-led council said.

The Wave opened in 2008 as a 230-seat cinema, concert hall and conference centre.

The new name was voted on by members of the public.

Changes and showers have been added for the first time.

The venue will also have a cafe and catering facilities, the local authority added.

Fryer said people were "amazed" by the transformation of the building.

Other schemes, funded from a government regeneration fund, include a pirate-themed harbourside play area and a new skate park.
