People in Guernsey have been asked to check their bin collection dates over the Christmas period.

The States of Guernsey said Christmas and New Year was its "busiest fortnight of the year" for island waste and wanted to ensure no households missed their dates.

Some collections will be moved forward or take place later than usual, it said.

The Household Waste & Recycling Centre at Longue Hougue will be open until 15:00 GMT on Christmas and New Years Eve and closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Years Day and 2 January.

Douglas Button, waste minimisation and sustainability officer, said information would be available on the States website and its social media.

He said: "This is the peak time of the year for waste and recycling, so we are encouraging everyone to be conscious of what they are producing, and reduce, reuse and recycle as much as they can.

"We are really proud of islanders' efforts and last year we recycled more than 68% of our household waste which is a phenomenal achievement and puts us up there with the very best.''
