Bid to turn ex-school into Aldi store and homes

Part of a former school site in Kent could be turned into an Aldi supermarket, 11 flats and eight houses.
Halil Ersunger and his Maidstone-based agent, Prime Folio, are looking at developing a section of the former St John Fisher Catholic Comprehensive School in Chatham.
The application would see six two-bed and five one-bed flats in a retained Edwardian building, and eight three-bed houses towards the back of the plot.
The remaining area of the school, which moved to a new site in Rochester in 2022 after nearly 60 years in Chatham, is earmarked to be an Aldi.
The Edwardian house was built in 1901 and its exterior will remain mostly unchanged, apart from the removal of a conservatory.
The other part of the site, where there are former school buildings dating from the 1970s, is owned by Aldi.
An application made for their demolition on 4 February was later retracted.
The company previously conducted a public consultation about the possibility of a new store, which is less than two miles from another branch near Rochester Airport.
It says it is preparing an application for submission to Medway Council for the site.
