A warning has been issued after two people fell from Brighton's West Pier.

HM Coastguard said it received multiple 999 calls at around 12:40 BST on 1 July reporting two people in difficulty in the water.

Both sustained "serious cuts", a suspected dislocated shoulder and were taken to hospital, the service said.

"Climbing on old structures in or over water, tombstoning or jumping into water from height is dangerous," posted HM Coastguard Shoreham on Facebook.

"There's always a possibility of submerged rocks, metal or shallow water," it continued.

"Don't do it! Stay safe."

Newhaven and Shoreham coastguard rescue teams, Brighton RNLI lifeboat, South East Ambulance Service and Sussex Police responded to the incident, which came as the South East experienced scorching weather.

Lifeguards recovered the pair from the water, HM Coastguard added.
