The M1 in Derbyshire was closed for emergency repairs after a crash caused a fuel spillage on the road.
National Highways initially closed two lanes of the motorway from junction 29A near Chesterfield after a collision between a lorry and a car at 16:15 GMT on Wednesday.
All three lanes of the motorway were then closed northbound from junction 29a from about 05:00 on Thursday for emergency resurfacing work to be carried out.
Vehicles have been diverted off the motorway via slip roads to avoid the area, leading to lengthy tailbacks on the M1.
