More than 100 chairs, sofas and flame-effect cabinets have been destroyed after an investigation found them to be unsafe.

North Tyneside Council's trading standards team launched an investigation after receiving a complaint about unlabelled furniture being sold in South Shields.

Tests found highly flammable furniture without the appropriate labels and electric flame-effect cabinets with unsafe plugs.

Councillor Karen Clark, responsible for public health, said such items could have "devastating consequences".

A council spokesman said the trader, who is not being named, "voluntarily surrendered" the stock.

It included 27 sofas, 24 armchairs, 48 dining chairs, three bed bases, three mattresses and 14 electric flame-effect cabinets.

A council spokesman warned people to "remain vigilant" and check items for safety labelling, CE/UKCA markings and instructions.
