Two people have been arrested after a 33-year-old woman was found dead inside a house in Leicester.

Leicestershire Police was called to St Austell Road by East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) at 03:40 GMT on Sunday after the woman was pronounced dead.

A 29-year-old man and 37-year-old woman have been arrested "in connection with the incident" and remain in custody.

Due to prior police contact, the force has made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

A cordon remains in place at the address while officers investigate and search the house.

Det Insp Mark Parish, who is leading the investigation, said: "It is currently unclear exactly how the woman died but officers are working to understand exactly what has occurred and determine if someone was responsible for her death.

"At this stage two people have been arrested while we work to establish the full facts surrounding this incident.

"I would ask that people don't speculate about what may have occurred - we are working quickly to try and piece together the events leading up to the woman's death."

An IOPC spokesperson added: "We can confirm we have received a referral from Leicestershire Police in relation to this matter and we will now carry out an assessment to decide what further action is required by us."
