A lorry driver has been charged with drink-driving after crashing into an ambulance, police have said.

The HGV hit the emergency vehicle as its crew were with police treating a pedestrian who had been struck by a car in Southampton after an earlier incident on Thursday evening.

A paramedic in a rapid response vehicle had to be sent along with a second ambulance to take the pedestrian, a woman in her 60s, to hospital.

Police said the lorry driver, a 48-year-old man from Salisbury, had been bailed to appear before Southampton Magistrates' Court on 3 February.

The ambulance service said the pedestrian suffered serious arm and shoulder injuries after being hit on the junction with High Road and Parkville Road at about 17:45 GMT.

No-one was injured in the HGV crash.

The damaged ambulance had to be taken off the road. Its crew swapped to another to finish their shift.
