Two men have been taken to hospital - one in a "serious condition" - following a "major fight in the town centre" with officers making two arrests.

Suffolk Police were called to High Street, Newmarket, at around 15:40 GMT on Saturday, following a report of an "altercation" involving "a number" of people. It added that two people needed medical treatment.

The East of England Ambulance service told the BBC: "It was a major fight in the town centre. Three ambulances were sent. One patient, a male, was taken to Addenbrooke's hospital in a serious condition."

Two men, aged 26 and 23 from Newmarket, were arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm, police said.

In a social media post, the force previously said the road had been closed in both directions, but it has since reopened.

A police spokesperson asked witnesses or people with information about the incident to "contact Bury St Edmunds Police quoting reference 37/12771/25".
