'Erratic' driver had drugs strapped to his leg

A man has been jailed for nearly six years after police spotted his car being driven erratically and later found £3,000 worth of Class A drugs down his trousers.

Joseph Gbonda was first seen by a routine patrol vehicle on Kent Avenue in Bedford, and he failed to stop until he hit a kerb and a tyre burst.

Officers found drug paraphernalia and more than £2,000 in cash in his car.

Bedfordshire Police said officers suspected he had swallowed drugs and he was taken to hospital, where 23 wraps of cocaine and heroin were discovered strapped to his leg.

At Luton Crown Court, Gbonda, 38, of Walcourt Road in Kempston, was sentenced to five years and eleven months in prison for failure to stop for police, being concerned in the supply of Class A drugs and possession of a Class B drug.

He will also be banned from driving for two years.
